Freedom, Adventure and Fun

Looking for a kite trip that combines adventure, challenge and time to relax? Rather than focusing on covering great distances everyday (multi-day downwinders can be up to 15 days long) you’ll usually spend at least a day or two in each of the places you visit on a Freeride Kitesurf trip so that you can get to know the spot before moving on.

Note - Freeride Kitesurf also organise a wide selection trips in Cape Town to suit riders of all levels, and the 'Choice Rating' at the top/left hand side refers to Brazil. You can view our destination report for Cape Town here:

BRAZIL’S DOWNWIND KITE SAFARIS

Freeride Kitesurf offers 5 different downwind Kite Safari routes in the north east of Brazil which combine challenge and adventure, as well as time to relax in the best accommodations. All their trips are supported by an amazing team of professionals with extensive local expertise, guiding you through unique spots with stunning landscapes and unbeatable kitesurfing conditions.

FIVE ROUTES

RIO GRANDE DO NORTE - PIPA TO GALINHOS

Over 12 days you’ll cover 200 kilometres kiting through the northern part of state Rio Grande do Norte discovering tropical rainforests, incredible desert landscapes and surging river mouths, while shredding lagoons and awesome wave spots along the way. In addition to the excellent kitesurfing spots, the state also boasts an authentically rich and vibrant culture, and a natural beauty that can and should be experienced first hand.

SOUTH-EAST OF FORTALEZA - TREMEMBE TO IGUAPE

Also over 12 days and 200 kilometres, this time exploring the beaches south of Fortaleza. Fewer people kite this stretch of coastline as it’s wrongly believed to be less windy than Brazil’s better known kite locations (people fly into Fortaleza and then generally follow the wind north, so that’s where the development is). There are some incredible spots to explore to the south, too - two of Brazil’s best flat water spots can be found here; Barra Nova and Parajuru.

CLASSIC - CUMBUCO TO JERICOACOARA

Get to know some of our sport's most famous locations with this downwinder from Cumbuco to Jericoacoara. With 280km of coastline to play with you'll pass by numerous fishing villages and exotic landscapes with terrific sand dunes and lagoons along this beautiful long stretch of coast.

Downwinders are typically between 30-60km per day and strategic overnight pit stops allow for exploring, ensuring you make the most out of the trip and appreciate why Brazil is one of the top destinations for kitesurfing in the world.

COMBO - ICARAIZINHO TO ATINS

At 400 kilometres this is the longest trip Freeride Kitesurf offer, crossing three different states; Ceará, Piauí and Maranhão.

Experience dreamy, deserted, long beaches in Ceará where the route takes you through lagoons and river mouths hidden along the way. Passing through Piauí, a heaven for kitesurfers, you'll enter the Delta of Parnaiba, one of the largest deltas in the Americas, dotted with countless tiny islands and amazon-like jungle.

This trip ends at a small village just outside The Lencois Maranhenses, a world-renowned national park of crystal clear flat water lagoons surrounded by magnificent sand dunes. Time almost stops here, and you'll be left wanting more.

Adventure, nature and adrenaline is what you’ll be getting on this trip, so if you’re after a REAL Kite Safari adventure look no further!

WILD NORTH - BARRA GRANDE TO ATINS

On this trip you will kite 200km whilst travelling the coastlines of two different states; Piauí and Maranhão. Besides the occasional fisherman, the people in your group will be the only people you'll see whilst crossing deserted beaches, lagoons and river mouths en route to the Delta of Parnaiba, with its almost infinite chain of islands. Finishing up at the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park with it's endless dunes and crystal clear water lagoons, you’ll feel completely connected with beauty and nature (you may have seen images of the Red Bull Rally Dos Ventos race which takes place in this incredible national park).

CAPE TOWN

Nestled at the foot of the spectacular Table Mountain, Cape Town is probably one of the most vibrant and buzzing cities in the world. Lively day and night the city is renowned for its incredible mixture of cultures, and entrepreneurial nature that is reflected in the city's bars, restaurants, markets and shops. In addition, the mix of beaches and surrounding scenery make the city even more interesting and justify why Cape Town is voted one of the top ten cities in the world.

20km outside of the city centre in a small suburb called Blouberg is where you'll find the main and most popular kitesurfing spots in Cape Town. With a varied stretch of coastline suitable for all levels there are numerous classic spots - Sunset Beach, Dolphin Beach, Kite Beach and Big Bay - where the southeaster increases throughout the day. Carry on a few clicks up the road you'll reach Haakgat, a small beach holding a big fast wave that's not for the inexperienced wave rider. Melkbos is the last  spot you'll get to on this stretch of coastline and it can work well when other spots like Kite Beach are getting blown out. As a rule; when the sou'easter is cranking, head north in search of less wind.

Mix it up!

Freeride Kitesurf run a variety of trips beyond the regularly visited Western Cape and suit riders of all levels whilst ensuring that all riders on each trip are of a similar level, so nobody ends up feeling left behind or outcasted.

WEST COAST

Head up the west coast and you'll find that South Africa is wilder that the immediate and busy surroundings of Cape Town. The southeaster also blows strongly throughout the season here so check out spots like Yzerfontein, Paternoster, Langebaan, Saldanha Bay and Velddrif which offer some excellent quieter conditions for kiting against the contrasts of greens and the vast sand dunes and beaches that run for kilometres.

CAPE PENINSULA

Located within Cape Point's Nature Reserve you'll find Scarborough and Misty Cliffs offering neat and great wave riding conditions that work in both a southeasterly or northwesterly wind direction. Wistands is also located close by, a beautiful isolated beach with fine white sands and surrounded by dunes. Slightly further south, and closer to the Cape of Good Hope there's Platboom beach which works again perfectly in the southeaster. Although the waves are nicely formed here, this spot is only suited for the advanced and experienced wave riders as when the Cape Doctor blows strong you can experience waves that reach up to 6 meters high.

EAST COAST

Ideal for those with a real sense of adventure, and without travelling too far away from Cape Town, you can experience warmer water and a more tropical climate and environment (that becomes more apparent the further away you travel from Cape Town) along a 1,700km stretch of the Indian Ocean ranging from False Bay to Santa Lucia. Although this part of South Africa is lesser know to traditional tourism and kitesurfers, you'll find three classic spots offering a variety of flatwater lagoons and wave spots - Witsand, Hermanus and Struissbaai.
