“Combine the consistent kiting conditions with a cool mix of relaxed local and European style dining and good accommodation - and you have yourself one killer holiday!”

COLLEEN CARROLL, NORTH KITEBOARDING PRO RIDER

For six months of the year, Uhuru Beach in Jambiani offers up epic conditions with no crowds across its long beach and vast, sandy bottomed lagoons. You'll find a range of conditions for all levels of rider with steady ten to 14 metre kite weather, flat water, chop and fun waves from 0.5 to 2.5 metres out on the reef. You’ll not be battling for space either as, even on a busy day, you’ll never see more than 30 kiters out on the water.

GOOD FOR: Steady conditions, excellent food and a real cultural experience!

You’ll find a relaxed pace of life in Jambiani. The Uhuru Beach hotel has 17 beautiful villas situated right on the beach, so you can literally step out of your front door and rig up. They offer everything from single and double rooms to bigger accommodation that’ll house up to four people at once.

KiteWorldWide's Red Monkey Lodge is a sustainable set-up and also right on the spot.

There are no nightclubs in Jambiani but there’s still stuff happening including the weekly Monday night jam sessions with local musicians and there’s usually a guest DJ on at the weekends for a post-session blowout. There’s also a fairly regular party scene in nearby Paje which is ten minutes away, but be respectful and modest with your clothing as Zanzibar is a muslim country and raucous behaviour is not appreciated.

If the wind doesn’t blow there’s no reason to fret! Zanzibar is a spice island rich in history and heritage and there’s loads to do. Go on a cycle tour, SUP through the mangroves, take a cultural / historical tour and visit the colourful markets of Stone Town (one hour away), swim with dolphins, go surfing, diving, deep sea fishing, wakeboarding or take a boat safari. The options are almost limitless!

Ten minutes away nearby Paje has a small supermarkets and lovely restaurants with traditional set-ups where beach boys cook your food over an open fire. You’ll spend around $15 a head for a meal in a hotel but a meal at a local place can be as low as $2-3. Either way, it’s not expensive.

Getting around is easy as taxis are cheap and plentiful but a scooter is good for a day's sight seeing. You can also rent quad bikes or cars, but everything around Jambiani is within easy walking distance.

You can pay for things using the Tanzanian Shilling or USD but there’s no (reliable) ATM nearby, so withdraw cash at the airport or in Stone Town if you get the chance.

WHEN TO GO

Two trade wind seasons:
December - March
June - September
Avg Air Temp: 30°C / 86°F
Avg Water Temp:  27°C / 80°F

The best time to head to Uhuru is during Zanzibar’s summer months from December to March (January and February being the windiest), or during the winter between June and September.

The wind blows from the south almost non-stop 24 hours a day during the summer, side shore from the right with air temperatures ranging between 30 - 35°C / 86 - 95°F. In winter it drops down to between 25 - 32°C / 77 - 90°F with the wind blowing from the north / the left.

The water averages 27°C / 80°F so you won’t need a wetsuit but pack a rashie to avoid sunburn!

UHURU BEACH RESORT
