THE LURE

Scoring waves and flat water, disconnecting from the outside world and hiking through rainforests to waterfalls.

Kingfisher Resort

THE SET-UP

Kingfisher Resort near Pagudpud is one of the windiest spots in the Philippines with some of the best wave riding in the entire country. There are several spots around the area offering flat water and waves depending on the day’s conditions. This area has been referred to as the ‘New Hawaii’ by some of the pros who’ve visited.

You can pump up and hit the water straight in front of the resort, which is a tide dependent spot (the only one in the area) but when it’s on you get reeling right handers and, as it’s very rarely crowded, you may well get the whole place to yourself! A reef protects the bay, inside of which there’s flat water for freestyle or learning to kite. There are more wave spots nearby and the kite school crew can give you some tips on riding there. At the Bangui windmills you can ride waves on one side of the beach and then flat, fresh water on the other (just mind your kite on those turbines!).

WIND, WEATHER AND WATER

The windy season runs from October to March with November to January getting the strongest winds and biggest waves. During that time, you can expect to be out on seven to nine metre kites, but you might even need a five metre in the waves because it can reach 30 knots and beyond on the windiest days.

January is the coldest month when the air temps can drop to 20°C / 75°F, before reaching up to 33°C / 84°F in summer (non windy season). Water temperatures have less variability, ranging from 25°C / 77°F during the winter to 29.5°C / 85°F in summer. You won’t need a wetsuit, but a thermal rashie or a light shortie wetsuit might be necessary for the windchill if you really feel the cold.

The prevailing wind direction for most of the year is from the east / northeast except in summer when it blows from the south and west. It’s a lot lighter at that time of year though and the humidity is high, so get there in the winter months.

Kingfisher Resort

NO WIND

The Kingfisher Resort and surrounding area is positively paradisical and if there’s no wind then you can stand-up paddle, kayak, hike to the nearby waterfalls and beaches, snorkel, go spearfishing and more. The closest town is Pagudpud which is 15 kilometres away. There aren’t a huge number of places to eat around Kingfisher but the resort restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

There’s awesome surf potential in the area with both reef, point and beach breaks delivering fun waves for beginner and experienced surfers alike. Waves can kick up on most swell directions and on windless days the kite spots around Kingfisher really light up for surfing.

This region of the Philippines is very safe and if you’re staying at Kingfisher Resort then you won’t need to drive to the beach because the spot is right on your doorstep. If you do want to explore further afield then you can go by tuk-tuk / taxi or hire a car / motorcycle.

Pagudpud is a reasonably sized town and there are some shops and supermarkets in the area where you can get basic supplies.
