Less than an hour’s drive from the capital, Dorado Beach and the Dorado Beach Resort play host to Goodwinds Kitesurf Centre and inclusive kite spot for its patrons. The bay is perfect for beginners and ‘improvers’ while a short tack to the outer reef offers some outstanding wave riding for intermediate to advanced kiters. The beach works well in the regular northerly and easterly winds. At its best at high tide, it still provides some good riding conditions at lower tide states. However, be sure to watch out for rip tides and remember that you will need to either book lessons with Goodwinds kite school or be a resort guest to ride there.

Puerto Rico’s easterly trades sweep across the island year round averaging around 19 knots. Most reliable November through to August, during the summer there are beautiful flat waters or waves depending on the spot with regular 15-25 knots. Puerto Rico really starts to shine as a wave destination in winter with excellent conditions on the outer reefs while beginners can still learn in the protected smoother waters closer to shore. Year round temperatures average 26°C / 80°F in the lower elevations and 21°C / 70°F in the mountains. Water temps hover around 26°C / 80°F throughout the year, so you certainly won’t need any neoprene.

Several options available at the resort (all of which are luxurious to say the least) ranging from the Resort Residences overlooking the island’s lush green mountains to privately owned villa rental or the first ever Ritz-Carlton Reserve hotel in the Americas. Prices vary throughout the year. More at:

If you want to stay beach side then head to Culebra to enjoy the pristine Caribbean beaches, or Vieques where you can experience the magic of two bioluminescent bays at night. It’s a short flight from the US mainland and is direct from most major American airports.
