Planet Kitesurf’s guide to Mauritius

Planet Kitesurf Mauritius

The travel experts give us the inside knowledge on a true kiting paradise

The team at Planet Kitesurf Holidays can’t get enough of Mauritius. With dreamy beaches, incredible hotels, stunning flat water lagoons, world class wave spots and consitant winds this Indian Ocean island is a kitesurfer’s dream come true. Thinking of heading out there? Here’s the inside line on where to stay!

Le Morne

Le Morne really is a paradise for kitesurfers. The main kitesurfing centre is located on the lagoon where a south easterly wind blows side shore or side onshore consistently from July to October. The flat water here makes it the perfect place for beginners to learn to kitesurf or for improvers to practice. Further out you’ll find some unreal wave spots, including the world famous One Eye which is strictly for advanced waveriders.

The best hotel in Le Morne, and perhaps all of Mauritius, is the St Regis. The spacious rooms are furnished with modern wooden furniture, providing a very elegant, yet comfortable, space. The service at the St Regis is outstanding and the on-site kite centre offers premium instruction and rental.

The local instructors are very conscious about educating kitesurfers to understand the conditions and Emma at the centre is super passionate and helpful and is always on hand to advise about wind conditions, organise pick-ups, and to help book lessons or equipment.

There’s no suit required during the summer months but, during the main windy season in winter, a thin wetsuit would come in handy. Definitely take boots with you as the bottom of the lagoon is studded with coral and urchins.

Anse Le Raie

Anse La Raie is a shallow bay located on the northeastern tip of the island of Mauritius, offering plenty of space and flat, shallow water. Entering the water can be a bit tricky as there is a 5-10 metre wide isle between the rocks where you walk in and if you’re a little insecure about handling the kite you could get into trouble here. The nearby trees don’t make the area easy to launch from, but for advanced kitesurfers this place is a paradise because of the stunning scenery, uncrowded waters and very reliable wind.

There are a variety of hotels to enjoy around the Anse Le Raie area, while Grand Baie has a host of restaurants and shops. A great option is 20 Degrees South. This incredible hotel underwent a complete renovation in 2017 and is now better than ever with its warm cosy atmosphere, great quiet location and stunning attention to detail.

Belle Mare

Located on the east coast of Mauritius, Belle Mare offers beautifully flat water inside a closed turquiose lagoon with no currents or boat traffic. What sets the east coast of Mauritius apart from many other destinations is the variety of organised ‘downwinders’. The east coast is the perfect place to go on a downwinder as the combination of flat water and waves to kite on throughout the journey, along with the crystal clear waters will keep you mesmerised.

The Lux Belle Mare, one of Planet’s favourite resorts on the east coast, has an elegant style with unique features. In the lobby is the Lux café, where they serve coffee that’s roasted on site and it’s by far the best on the island. You can even go behind the bar and join in the process of roasting the beans. The hotel also offers a very exciting concept called ‘message in the bottle’.

They hide five bottles on the property every day with exciting gifts to win, such as a massage in the spa, a nice cup of coffee or discounts at their restaurants. The hotel also has its own tea centre, with a library where you can relax and take part in a tea ceremony with local and international specialties.

One of the best features of this hotel is the wish tree in their garden where you can write a wish and note your room number on a leaf and tie it up on the tree. They then collect the wishes and pick one lucky winner who will be able to come back for a free holiday!

Bel Ombre

Bel Ombre is suitable for beginners with a shallow lagoon with side shore / side onshore wind. The launching and landing area is on a sandy beach but the resort facilities will also let you pack your kite away on the grassy areas. The tidal movements can have a big effect on the sea state so its best for beginners to book lessons as the centres know the best times to get out on the water. Planet Kitesurf’s partner centre in Bel Ombre uses North gear and has a variety of rental and instruction options including some amazing downwinder trips.

Heritage Le Telfair is without doubt the place to stay in Bel Ombre. This newly renovated property is set on a massive area with a number of attractions including a world-class golf course and a fantastic kids club with its own pool, play park, animal section and herb garden.  At the centre of the hotel sits the original colonial house which is surrounded by a sugar plantation and an impressive garden. The chateau features a restaurant on the ground floor and an original colonial style residence to stay in on the top floor with magical views.
