BAKL Press release:
WHAT IS THE BAKL?

The Big Air Kite League, or BAKL, was started in 2019 in Cape Town with the aim of giving up-and-coming riders an opportunity to compete. While Big Air is gaining popularity and events like the Lords of Tram and Full Power Balnaerio have entered the scene, traditionally there have only two yearly high performance Big Air Video competitions. These competitions are held by Red Bull, namely the Megaloop challenge in Holland, and the King of The Air in Cape Town.

This worldwide competition platform is able to give up and coming riders and opportunity to go head-to-head with their idols and push the progression of Big Air Kiting to new levels.

WHY DID WE RUN A VIDEO COMP?

Due to Covid travel restrictions in 2020, many of these competitions were unable to take place. This online video competition is for the riders who wanted to show off their talent, while making use of the conditions they had access to.

WHO ENTERED?

Riders from the full spectrum of the kite community entered. We had pro riders like Edgar Ulrich and Janek Grzegorzewski submitting tricks for the Best Trick Pro division, the Biggest Crash division had some absolutely brutal wipeouts from the riders, and the Best Trick amateur had some incredible submissions showcasing some seriously innovative Big Air riding.

WHAT WERE THE PRIZES?

A massive shoutout to the sponsors of this event, Ride Engine, Core Kiteboarding, and Lieuwe Handcrafted Custom Boards for their generous prize donations. For the Best Trick Pro division, we were able to give €570 to the winner. This prize purse was generated by the viewers and supporters of the BAKL. For every sale made on Big Air Kite website, 5% of the sale goes towards running events.

We would also like to thank our panel of judges who so willingly assisted in judging this event. Without your generosity we would not be able to run these events.

ANY NOTABLE HIGHLIGHTS

In the Best Trick Pro division, it was incredible to see the level of riding but it was Edgar Ulrich and Janek Grzegorzewski who stole the show. Each of them submitted a number of tricks as entries and between the two of them they managed to steal the top 7 scores among the entries. Quite a sight!
