Kitesurfing The Grenadines

"Days just aren't long enough to do all the fun things there are to do here. Whether it's kiting, surfing or partying... the conditions are always good! It's an island of endless summer wher the people always smile."

Susi Mai, pro rider and Cabarete resident

THE LURE

Union Island is renowned for some of the bluest flat water you’ve ever seen as well as its’ consistent, steady, cross shore winds. Perhaps you also remember seeing images that we ran of that particularly well known bar on Happy Island that you can kite up to and have a beer at (or a particularly dangerous rum punch) with your kite still flying (decent kite-handling skills required!)?

THE SET-UP

The season runs from mid-December to late June; the windiest time being from Christmas until April. The easiest accessible spot on the island is the beach at The Anchorage Yacht Club where the JT Pro Center, one of the three kite schools on Union Island, is located. The lagoon is surrounded by reef that creates a very good flat water spot. To ride here, you need to be able to go upwind as there is a popular anchorage for sailboats downwind, but as mentioned there are plenty of instructors to help you get up to speed / brush up on your skills.

Frigate is one of the best alternative spots where the wind blows offshore over the walkway of an abandoned marina project, creating perfectly flat water. A rescue boat is needed, but the schools organise downwinders and trips.

Several other awesome spots are only reachable by boat. Again, the kite schools and local boat operators offer trips and downwinders to the surrounding islands and reefs.

WIND, WEATHER & WATER

The best months for kiting are when the trade winds blow between December and June when it’s windy 90% of the time, averaging 15 to 22 knots. The average wind speed drops to 12 to 18 knots from July to August and it’s slightly less consistent with wind on 50 to 60% of days. From then until Christmas the wind gets lighter and less frequent, before building up again up towards the start of the high season in January.

Water temperatures: 27 - 28°C/ 80 - 82°F throughout the year. Air temperatures: 30 - 32°C/ 86 - 90°F so no neoprene is required.

ACCOMMODATION

Union Island is pretty small at around four square miles, but there are a few accommodation options for a range of budgets. Anchorage Yacht Club is a popular choice on Union Island, with 15 amazing beachfront rooms and cottages, four of which are directly on Kite Beach where the resident JT Pro Center operates. The Yacht Club is the largest piece of privately owned beach front land on the island. Buzzing with atmosphere, there’s also a bar, restaurant, marina and yacht services. They even have a lobster pond and an excursion service to the Tobago Cays.

NO WIND

If the wind is light go hiking around the island, explore the Tobago Cays, swim with turtles, go fishing, rent bikes or just chill on the beach, eating seafood and checking out the spa treatments available at the yacht club!

GET AROUND

Clifton is the biggest town and just a three minute walk from the yacht club, with bank, pharmacy and local fruit stands as well as a supermarket and some local bars and restaurants. The island is small so you don’t need to worry too much about transport, but you can rent a bike if walking isn’t your thing and the local buses charge about $2 to go between towns and villages.

CURRENCY

Eastern Caribbean Dollar (ECD) - £1 = ECD3.8 / $1 = ECD2.7 (fixed rate) / €1 = ECD3.

Many businesses will accept Euro or US currency. There is one ATM on the island but it’s usually empty on Saturdays and Sundays, so remember to take cash out on a Thursday for the weekend.

AIRPORT

Union Island international airport (UNI) connects to most places within 100 miles or so and is well linked to Barbados, Grenada, St.Lucia, St.Vincent and all the little Grenadines islands.
