THE SET-UP

Located on the northern tip of the island, the local kite grounds start between the small, privately owned island of Viubani and Taveuni which creates an amazing compression effect; this area extends to the northern most point of Taveuni. Inside the reef is a huge expanse of shallow flat water over a sandy and seagrass bottom. Kite out to the reef and you’ll be exploring small waves and uninhabited islands. Take an hour’s drive to Lavena or a sailing trip on the local catamaran, aptly named ‘Looping’. and you could be kiting inside sunken calderas or pulling into perfect waves that have never been ridden. It’s perfect for all levels and you’ll be guided by Moon Tours.

WIND, WEATHER AND WATER

Predominant ESE trade winds May – October averaging 15 – 20 knots are often exacerbated by thermal and compression effects of the local land masses. The best times are June to September and bring a quiver of nine and 12 metres for averagely sized riders. This is one of those beautiful areas that the average air and water temperatures are roughly the same – around 27°C / 80°F. It’s rarely cold enough to warrant a jumper or a wetsuit, unless you really feel the cold.

ACCOMMODATION

Matei is also home to the majority of accommodation on the island, ranging from USD$20 - $2000 per night. Most of the resorts are small but high-end with little mid range options. Moon Tours clients stay at Maravu, formerly a 5 star resort and the biggest on the island, now open to a range of options from USD$20 in a shared dorm to around USD$100 per night. The bar, restaurant and pool area is a great place to hang out and relax.

SCHOOLS

MOON TOURS offer coaching and clinics in Fiji, Zanzibar and Papua New Guinea with rescue boat support when necessary. Nick Jacobsen will co-host an Africa trip in 2015 and Best riders for their Fiji trips to be announced. They also arrange mid to top-end wildlife safaris.

NO WIND

Located in Fiji’s northern division, Taveuni is Fiji’s third largest island, so there is plenty to do. Climb up Fiji’s highest mountain for incredible views, visit hundreds of waterfalls, a world heritage park, famous dive sites (including the ‘Great White Wall’ – rated one of the top five soft coral dives in the world), or go for a sail on the 43 foot cat ‘Looping’ to sunken calderas and sand atolls for fishing, snorkelling, and great food finished off onboard under the stars.

GET AROUND

There are no official car rental services on Taveuni. Moon Tours have their own vehicles and there are plenty of local taxis. The nearest town to the kite spot is Matei with some small general stores and a bakery. There are a number of other small towns and villages to explore as you navigate the dirt roads. Moon Tours staff have formed a great relationship with local villagers, working closely with them to ensure that the area does benefit as kiteboarders give-back during their visit to the area. Fijians are regularly acknowledged as the friendliest people on earth with large warm smiles and welcoming ‘Bula Bula’ handshakes. Like anywhere in the world, valuables should be secured although theft, violence and unrest are very rare. All in all this is a very safe place to visit.

CURRENCY

Fijian Dollar (FJD) - £1 = FJD3.1 / €1 = FJD2.3 / US$1 = FJD2. Exchanging money, making ATM withdrawals and using credit card facilities are no problem on the island.

FOOD AND DRINK

A number of hotels welcome outside guests to eat and drink, so there are a number of eatery options. Food is usually a mix of western, traditional Fijian and Indian influences.

AIRPORT

Fly into Nadi international airport on the main Viti Levu Island before taking a connecting flight to Matei on Taveuni. It’s advisable to book your international and connecting flight with Fiji Airways or one of its partner airlines to avoid excessive excess luggage costs on the much smaller internal flight. Transfers are taken care of by Moon Tours and their accommodation and local kite beach is within a couple of minutes from Matei airport.
