Kitesurfing St Martin, Caribbean

“While Orient Bay is the most user-friendly and popular beach for kitesurfing, the dynamic shape of the islands create many coves and points to explore and find a variety of flat water and wave riding spots!”

Evan Netsch, Cabrinha pro rider

The Lure

Located in the middle of the West Indian Archipelago, St Martin has 36 beaches in total and is a real Caribbean idyll. There are two main spots, Orient Bay and Nettle Bay. Orient Bay is on the windward side of the island while Nettle Bay is on the Caribbean side where there is generally less wind.

On the water

The main launching area at Orient Bay is between two restaurants. Although relatively narrow it’s workable and there’s a designated kiting area to divide kiters and swimmers. The wind is side onshore and uninterrupted but you must be able to ride upwind if you’re kiting there so that you don’t stray into the swimming zone.

This isn’t a spot to show off by jumping close to the beach, but once you’re clear of the shore you can ride the perfectly flat waters of the Papagayo lagoon or find waves on the Green Cay outer reef. There is also another wave spot called Galion Beach just round the corner from Orient Bay where you’ll find waves breaking on the edge of yet another perfect blue lagoon.

If you kite across towards Tinamare Island or Pinel Island into the deep water where the winds are hair-dryer warm and steady, you’ll find an ideal area for foiling.

Although Nettle Bay is smaller and less windy, it’s a great shallow, flat water spot which is ideal for beginners and freestylers.

Wind, Weather & Water

The prevailing winds blow from the east, averaging around 15 knots. Mornings are generally the best time to head out and the trade winds are at their most reliable from December to March and expect to get plenty of use out of your 12 metre. Temperatures are a very pleasant 30°C / 85°F while the water is 24°C / 75°F all year round. A neoprene top can come in handy if the wind switches to the north during the winter, but that’s as much as you’ll need.

Off the water

St Martin has a multicultural, vibrant atmosphere and is an island of two halves that’s split between Dutch and French governance. The Dutch side is called St Maarten and is where you’ll find duty free shopping and the more raucous nightlife, while the French side is a little more reserved and is a foodie’s dream with some fantastic restaurants. Check out Grand Case for fantastic BBQ food and don’t miss Calmos Café on a Thursday night if you’re into Salsa (or even if you aren’t). Philipsburg is the main town on the Dutch side / Marigot on the French side - and they’re both a 25 minute drive to Orient Beach.

If there’s no wind go SUPing and sea kayaking around Orient Beach as well as snorkeling and diving elsewhere. There’s surfing at Galion Beach and horseback riding is also an option.

Currency

US Dollars are accepted everywhere, and you can use Euros on the French side.

Airport

Princess Juliana International airport (SXM) is the international airport on the Dutch side, just a 35 minute drive from Orient beach.
