Kitesurfing - Italy

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

The best flight availability is to Roma Ciampino (RCU) or Roma Fiumicino (FCO) with an alternative option being Pescara (PSR). Well serviced with cheap flights from all over Europe, Rome is only 100 kilometres away from the spot and Pescara is just 80. Both make this a possibility for a long weekend. If you aren't being picked up from the airport then car hire is the way to go. GoSnowkite have deals with both Europcar and Hertz (book one with GPS!). Santo Stefano di Sessanio is the place to stay, located within the national park it's about 15 minutes from Campo Imperatore and is a beautifully restored medieval town filled with stunning buildings and is famous for its production of lentils. There are a few bars and restaurants, again, check with GoSnowkite for accommodation options. The university city of L'Aquilla is about 30 minutes from Santo Stefano and Campo and offers plenty of night-life and more accommodation options. As you would expect in Italy the food is amazing and there are over 50 restaurants in L'Aquila with a few more down in the valley - so worth an explore.

NON-KITING KICKS

For the no/low wind days there's skiing / snowboarding at the nearby Gran Sasso ski resort (about 30 kilometres from the spot), telemarking, snowshoeing and, of course, sight seeing.

CORPORATE EVENTS

GoFreeride have been hosting corporate events in the area for over eight years and have attracted a huge range of companies looking for time and cost effective, but exciting, options for team leaders, rewards, management meetings, team building and client entertainment events. Ex-Red Bull athlete, Simon Critchell, offers a personal service arranging everything from accommodation and required IT through to creating fun, challenging and unique activities. Vespa tours, bike and hiking trails, climbing and orienteering, tandem paragliding, quad biking, archaeological.

SNAPSHOT

Campo Imperatore is in the 36 x 6 kilometre Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga national park, about a 90 minute drive from Rome in the highest region of the Apennines. As a national park there are no ski lifts or similar obstacles to worry about and the scenery is stunning. Campo Imperatore is ideal for freestyle and cross country kiting and for all levels of snowkiter.

THE KITING

Working best from December to May, this area offers a range of riding conditions that includes freestyle and cross country for all levels as well as areas that you can snowkite up and then ski/snowboard back down. The bottom surface is typically grass, reducing the danger of hitting rocks. Conditions generate a lot of powder with limited ice patches in the shade or after particularly cold spells. The plain is about six kilometres wide with an increase in elevation towards the edges for those looking for hills to climb and/or jump off. Similar to Norway's Hardangavidda plateau the area is a nature reserve so there are limited man-made obstructions and no shops or restaurants up on the plain, so carry your lunch and drink with you if riding away from vehicles. There is no mobile phone reception on the plain either.

SNOW, WIND AND WEATHER

The season runs from November to April and Campo Imperatore is kiteable about 75% of that time, as long as there is snow. The temperatures run from about -5 -+15C / 23 - 59F. Wind strength can vary, so bring all your kites if you can, although rental is available.
