Kitesurfing Sardinia

“My favourite time is early summer with green grass and colourful flowers everywhere. I think the north is the most beautiful area but there are different kiteboarding spots all round the island and good wind, so you can find any conditions you like. The Italian food here is wonderful too!”

Kari Schibevaag, RRD pro rider

The Lure

Located in the north of Sardinia near Palau, Porto Pollo boasts two large bays and seven kilometres of open sandy beach, making this an ideal destination for beginners, intermediates and advanced riders alike.

Wind, weather & water

The wind in this area most frequently ranges from 14 to 30 knots and you can almost always add on a few extra knots to the forecast due to the venturi effect as the wind accelerates through and over the mountains. In summer, when the wind is most reliable, it blows cross or cross onshore from the left with flat water on the western side of the bay and the waves diminishing in size the closer you get.

In spring and autumn the wind blows from the other direction, creating flat water on the right hand side of the bay instead, where it remains sheltered. Waves pick up on the left and are generally bigger at that time than during the main summer months. Eight to ten metre kite sizes are the norm in Porto Pollo. In the low season air temperatures range between 18°C / 64°F and 23°C / 73°F degrees. Between June and August expect 25°C / 77°F to 30°C / 86°F. Water temperatures average around 16°C / 61°F in the low season and reach up to 26°C / 79°F degrees in the high season. The drop off comes through September and October. You’ll manage without a wetsuit in the summer months but bring your 3/2 suit for spring and autumn.

No wind

Porto Pollo is seven kilometres from the nearby town of Palau, where you’ll find supermarkets, pharmacies and smaller, locally owned shops as well as a number of good restaurants serving quality local Italian cuisine.  If you’re looking to extend the evening there are also a selection of bars and nightclubs. Life in Palau revolves around the port. From there you can take a ferry to Maddalena Island, the biggest of the seven islands that form the Archipelago della Maddalena National Park.

This area of Sardinia is great for families and, if it’s not windy, you can all hire SUPs and kayaks whenever you like, otherwise chill on the beach, rent bikes, explore Palau or climb Mount Altura, which is close to Porto Pollo.

Get around

The area is stunning, so it’s a good idea to hire a car for at least a day or two to explore the area. There are also plenty of taxis to get around if you don’t want to drive into town or to the port.
