The Charleston area offers some of the most well-rounded kiteboarding conditions in the USA. The salt flats and Atlantic swells make a wonderful playground for all experience levels and the launches are super-friendly.
Expect about three days a week on the water here during the summer and when the wind and waves do turn on, it's hard to beat what 'Chucktown' delivers. Isle of Palms, Sullivan's Island and Folly beach all have great wave conditions, with Sullivan's having a unique sandbar producing table cloth flat water for speed runs at low tide. The waves at Folly tend to hit a bit harder and are generally for the more advanced riders. Isle of Palms and Sullivan's have a slight crescent shape to them and tend to be more forgiving.
From 3rd street on Isle of Palms to the south and west is the designated College of Charleston Kiteboarding Club's kite spot. Great for wave riding, it also works well as a high-tide launch. Station 28 to the north and east at Sullivan's are the best low tide and flat water spots in that area. This is just one area of a 63-mile stretch of coast, however, 60% of kite launches are located within 19-miles of each other, providing excellent riding in all wind conditions.
November - March frontal systems provide southwesterlies before the front, and northeasterlies after. Good surf conditions - expect four - eight foot faces and water temps around 10°C / 50°F. Wind averages 15 - 25 knots. March - October, mostly 12 - 18 knot sea breeze conditions with two - three foot waves. August - late October epic tropical storm ground swells can hit, but currents and squalls can get much more severe. Winter air temps 4°C / 40°F - 15°C / 60+°F in the winter. Cold snaps don't last too long, so water temps average 8°C / 47°F - 13°C / 55°F. Summer, 28°C / mid-80s+°F and still around 25°C / 78°F at night.
All the fun of Chucktown is ten miles down the road and, with so many kite spots to hit, car rental is the best way to go.
