Kitesurfing - Islas De La Madeleine

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

The airport (YGR) is located at Havre-aux-Maisons island right in the middle of the chain. The Aerosport store and school are just ten minutes from the airport - in fact everything is very close in these islands as they're only small. From the airport drive to Prince Edward Island and then take the CTMA ferry.

It is very easy to get around the islands, but you will need a car. It gets windy and with so many beaches a car means you can take advantage of all wind directions and conditions, changing spots within five minutes if the wind switches or if you decide to go from the lagoon to the ocean side.

Choose from four star hotels and inns, through to B&Bs and camp-sites for your accommodation. Commercial fishing is the main industry, so expect to eat plenty of seafood. There are bars in Lagrave within walking distance of the main spots where you'll find traditional and more modern hangouts. For heavier partying, Pas Perdus is the place to go.

Families and singles alike will find plenty to do even on the windless days, and people who've been once, usually return.

NON-KITING KICKS

Lots of adventurous activities on offer outside of soaking up the culture, such as sea-kayaking in the caves and along red cliffs. The beaches here really are the ultimate for land kiting, walking, biking or hiking on. Wakeboarding and sailing are also provided by Aerosport.

SNAPSHOT

From June to September, the Magdalen Islands provide one of the ultimate places to kitesurf in the world, with shallow lagoons and ocean-side spots to choose from on this chain of islands all connected by sand dunes. The PKRA world tour regularly stops here. When you're not kiting, there's also plenty of history, culture and seafood to consume!

THE KITING

The Magdalen islands stretch for 100 kilometres and with over 300 kilometres of beaches, there aren't many places as spectacular as this to kite. Shallow lagoons and ocean-side spots link up in this chain of islands to provide an absolute feast of kiteboarding action. The spectacularly long and wide, sandy beaches also provide an unbeatable location for learning and practising kitebuggying or mountainboarding.

WATER, WIND AND WEATHER

There are no wind stats for this area at present, but with the PKRA visiting here regularly, you can be sure it's very often windy. As these are small islands, any wind direction works, too. The water temperature in the lagoons sits at 21°C / 70°F in the summertime and a little colder on the ocean side. Expect flat to choppy water in the lagoon depending on the wind direction and a depth of between two and ten feet. Conditions are choppy to wavy on the ocean side.
