WIND, WEATHER & WATER
The Elements Watersports and Nature Resort is surrounded by a flat water lagoon, that at its deepest is just one-and-a-half metres, so is ideal for all
levels from beginner to advanced riders. The kite excursions in this area are excellent, including boat trips to Dutch Bay, Portugal Bay and the Puttalam Lagoon. Or take a downwinder from the Kalpitiya lagoon to Dutch Bay in flat water surrounded by mangroves and the array of wildlife at Wilpattu National Park. Kite Beach Villas can organise downwinders for you in this area, too. Elements Resort support underpriveleged children by providing access to education. Together with the local church and partner organisation 'Friends Lanka Child Foundation', they have built and funded a pre-school in the nearby village of Palakkudawa and they also maintain a 'clean the beach and lagoon' programme. Your stay with them will be literally about enjoying the 'elements'.
WIND, WEATHER AND WATER
The main wind season is May to September (summer) with the probability of kiting everyday in over 15 knots at the height of season in June. The wind is sideonshore from the southwest and can get strong, up to 35 knots. Cross-shore winds come from December to March but are generally lighter at 12 to 20 knots in the afternoon, but the Indian Ocean is also nice and flat at this time. This time of year is also a beautiful time for families and the less hardcore kiters not looking to spend ten hours a day on the water. The sea is calm and a deep blue, whereas you can expect more waves and chop in the main wind season. The air temperature throughout the year is a staggering 30°C / 86°F, day and night. No need for wetsuits as you have probably guessed, with the water simmering at 26°C / 79°F.
The nearest small village with convenience stores etc. is three kilometres away, and the nearest big village with pharmacies, banks, ATMs and telecom shops is ten kilometres away. The nearest hospital is 35 kilometres. Take taxis or tuk-tuks to wherever you need to go. Hiring a car is possible, but don't expect a well known hire car agent, just some local ones, and driving is a bit different to the styles you may be used to in Europe or the USA!
