KITESURFING HOLIDAYS - FLAG BEACH, FUERTEVENTURA

THE LURE

Spectacular beaches with clean and clear waters surround a relaxed, laid back Spanish atmosphere. Fuerteventura is a fantastic location and offers flat water and smooth winds, especially in the summer. Wave riders will find a consistent swell and relatively warm weather in the winter months with plenty of other spot options for a mix of conditions within a 20 minute drive.

THE SET-UP

The north of the island features a multitude of beaches smaller beaches than the south as well as pretty coves that offer a variety of conditions. Flag Beach is just outside of the bustling tourist town of Corralejo and is the most open golden sandy beach in the north. Summer conditions are lovely flat turquoise waters and steady cross-shore winds. Flag Beach is long with reefs at both ends that go roughly 50 metres out to sea. The beach is separated with kiters riding more upwind and windsurfers downwind in front of the Flag Beach centre. Just around the headland is Cotillo with rocky outcrops every hundred metres or so. Another great spot in the summer, there is a bit more of a current running here and in the winter it's a prime wave spot, attracting some of Europe's best wave kiters. Glass Beach (Playa del Burro) is in a nature reserve about five kilometres from Corralejo and is
perfect for wave riding. All spots are tidal and work on a mid-to high-tide.

WIND, WEATHER AND WATER

The NE winds blow from the right throughout the year moving up and down the Atlantic. Summer is the best time for wind and trades start to blow as early as March and remain good through to September. Nines and 12s are the most common kites. Winter brings changeable conditions; lots of onshore winds but also waves (bigger in the north of the island than the south). Bring bigger kites to kite regularly at this time, but there are epic wind and wave days. On average there are three to four days a week of wind.
Air temperatures - expect: 28°C / 82°F in summer and 22°C / 70°F in winter. The water temperature is around 22°C / 72°F in the summer, 18°C / 64°F in the winter.

GET AROUND

To get the most out of the island, hire a car. It only takes two hours to drive the length of it, so it's worth doing. Plus, if you want to surf, you'll need a car to get to the best, most tucked-away spots. Taxis will drop you off at the beach, but you may have a walk to find one when you're trying to get back.
Currency: Euro (€) - £1 = €1.2 / US$1 = €0.7 All the cash facilities you'd expect in Europe.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation in Corralejo is mainly self-catering apartments, although there are a few four star hotels and one luxury five-star. There isn't as much accommodation in Cotillo, but there are some quiet villages like Lajares in between Cotillo and Corralejo that have plenty of self-catering bungalows that are popular with kiters and worth checking out for a rustic, relaxed vibe.

FOOD AND DRINK

Corralejo is the main town in the north and, as it's mainly a busy tourist town, has everything you will need. There are a couple of large supermarkets in the Spanish part of the town. Find cheaper stores with more variety off the main streets. Cotillo is much more sedate and rustic with lots of low key restaurants and bars. Between Corralejo and Cotillo there are a large selection of restaurants, including Chinese, Indian, Italian, English and, of course, Spanish. Ask a local where the best authentic Spanish restaurants are for a real feast.

NO WIND

Snorkeling, scuba diving, mountain biking and deep sea fishing are popular and surfing and SUP are especially good in the winter months. Quad bike excursions are also available and Corralejo has a water park and more - it's seriously geared-up for the tourist. Catch a ferry over to Lobos island or take a day trip to Lanzarote.
