Kitesurfing - Cesme-Alacati

Boosty winds, no tides and a wide selection of spots all within close proximity, featuring fun waves and clear flat water, will keep you occupied on the water at this prime spot for a quick getaway.

Split into windsurfing and kitesurfing areas, Alacati Bay has some mild chop and crossshore wind conditions. At the end of the little bay is a shallow teaching area ahead of the launch site. Mersin Koy offers shallow, flat waters too, but the wind is a bit gustier as it's offshore, but it does mean you get lovely flat water. You'll need a car to get there though as it's a ten minute drive away. At Pirlanta you'll find some nice swells with good gaps in between. The wind is onshore here but the launch is easy because there's no tide. Beginners are better at Alacati Koy because of the shallow water and onshore winds, which are also brilliant conditions for improving your freestyle. Urla is a flat water spot featuring a sand bar with onshore winds on one side and lovely offshore flat water conditions on the other. Although they can stay on the onshore side here, the sandbar is fairly narrow and it's not shallow, so beginners may feel intimidated launching and want to stick to Alicati or Sifine. All beaches are lovely and sandy. Gokova is 2.5 hours up the road if you fancy a road trip.

The wind is strongest here before noon and lasts until around six or 7pm. Coming in from the north in the summer, from April to September, the best time for kiting is usually June, averaging 18 - 25 knots. Nine to 12m kites are the most popular sizes with lighter riders on sevens. In the winter the wind switches to come from the south, but there can be long periods without wind, until the storms hit and the winds get really ramped up. Summer air temperatures are between 25°C / 77°F and 30°C / 86°F and from 10°C / 50°F to 18°C / 64°F in the winter. Water temperature can get up to 25°C / 77°F in the summer and drop to 12°C / 54°F in the winter. Just a one millimetre wetsuit or rash guard is recommended for summertime water sessions, as is a light sweater for the evenings as it can get chilly. Bring a 3mm wetsuit in the winter.

It's worth renting a car or a scooter as some kite schools offer storage. Taxis are easily available as well as small, local buses within town, but to really make the most of the area, a car is needed as the kite spots are 10 to 20 minutes away from each other.

Cesme is a summer resort town and includes everything from five-star hotels to youth hostels.

The many clubs and bars are located next to each other. Friday and Saturday nights are big in town during summer and the town is packed with activities for everyone. Local cuisine is available and very cheap but if you are in the mood for something else there is a whole area of foreign restaurants. A massive marina opened up last year offering a wide selection of shopping and entertainment for the whole family.

Cesme in summer is a massive summer vacation resort, not only for kiters, so it's set-up for off-the-water and on-the-water fun. Hit the thermal spas, go scuba-diving or just enjoy the gorgeous local beaches. Rent a scooter and ride around the historical town and taking in the sights is another option, as are trips to the ancient city of Ephesus as well as water parks.

Izmir International Airport (ABD) is 45 minutes away from the town of Cesme, Alacati. There are buses every 30 minutes and taxis are easily available.
