Kitesurfing - Japan

Miyako Island in Okinaway is a luxury holiday destination with stunning diving as well as fantastic kiting.

Sanitsu Beach is on thewest side of Yonaha bay. Always flat and shallow, the sand is fine and super soft, so no need for booties. N to SE winds are perfect for lessons or freestyle. Takano Beach is on the east of the island and, like most places on the island, has flat, shallow and clean
waters. Working best in N - NE winds, head here if the water is too shallow at Sanitsu. There's also a little wave outside the reef. Maehama Beach is one of the most famous and beautiful in Japan. Wide and with very fine, soft sand, the ocean is also crystal clear and tropical. Not as shallow as the other spots, there's also usually some current to be careful of in light winds. Nishihama Beach is at the west end of Maehama Beach and is the most popular for kiting, suiting freestylers and beginners as it's flat and shallow.

October – April the wind is mainly NE in the main season averaging 15 – 25 knots. In summer the wind switches to a more southerly direction. Winter weather averages 25ºC / 77ºF, although the coldest season is December, January and February when it's slightly less. Winter water temps: 20 – 25ºC / 68 – 77ºF. In summer the day temps from June – September get up to 30ºC / 86ºF. The water is like a bath tub. Lessons are also better in winter as the shallow, flatter beaches can be used because of the wind direction.

Fly into Naha (OKA) airport and then onto Miyako (MMY). You can drive anywhere on the island in 15 – 30 minutes from the central city of Miyakojima. Car rentals available at the airport. There are lots of reasonably priced hotels, guest houses and apartments. Guesthouse Miyakojima is a kiteboarders' guesthouse close to the kite beaches and M-Air kite school. Miyakojima Tokyu resort is the most popular resort hotel in Miyakojima. In south winds hotel guests can launch on the beach in front of the hotel. There are supermarkets in the city as well as hundreds of restaurants and bars. If there's no wind, go snorkelling, diving, SUPing, sea kayaking, fishing, golfing, biking, driving or shopping.
