THE SET-UP

Less than an hour’s drive from the capital, Dorado Beach and the Dorado Beach Resort play host to Goodwinds Kitesurf Centre and inclusive kite spot for its patrons. The bay is perfect for beginners and ‘improvers’ while a short tack to the outer reef offers some outstanding wave riding for intermediate to advanced kiters. The beach works well in the regular northerly and easterly winds. At its best at high tide, it still provides some good riding conditions at lower tide states. However, be sure to watch out for rip tides and remember that you will need to either book lessons with Goodwinds kite school or be a resort guest to ride there.

WIND, WEATHER AND WATER

Puerto Rico’s easterly trades sweep across the island year round averaging around 19 knots. Most reliable November through to August, during the summer there are beautiful flat waters or waves depending on the spot with regular 15-25 knots. Puerto Rico really starts to shine as a wave destination in winter with excellent conditions on the outer reefs while beginners can still learn in the protected smoother waters closer to shore. Year round temperatures average 26°C / 80°F in the lower elevations and 21°C / 70°F in the mountains. Water temps hover around 26°C / 80°F throughout the year, so you certainly won’t need any neoprene.

ACCOMMODATION

Several options available at the resort (all of which are luxurious to say the least) ranging from the Resort Residences overlooking the island’s lush green mountains to privately owned villa rental or the first ever Ritz-Carlton Reserve hotel in the Americas. Prices vary throughout the year. More at: www.kitegoodwinds.com

A full range of North and Best gear as well as a packed watersports programme from SUP and sailing to tow-in surfing are offered. Languages spoken by instructors: English and Spanish. www.kitegoodwinds.com watersports@doradobeach.com +1 787 233 7862 Puerto Rico Dorado beach Kiteworld travel

NO WIND

Dorado Beach offers fantastic surfing and paddleboarding and Goodwinds even offer tow-in surfing behind jet-skis! Dorado Beach also has four golf courses available to guests, three of which are acclaimed championship facilities. If you have children there’s a huge water park and for your non-kiting spouse Dorado Beach has a world class spa along with wellness yoga, fitness programmes and two beautiful beach clubs to relax in. Beyond Dorado Beach there is a huge amount to do! Tour round Old San Juan and the two 16th century forts or head to the El Yunque national rainforest for some easy / moderate hikes up to waterfalls and spectacular views. If you want to stay beach side then head to Culebra to enjoy the pristine Caribbean beaches, or Vieques where you can experience the magic of two bioluminescent bays at night. GET AROUND

Car rental can be arranged through major firms at the airport. It’s only worth hiring a car if you decide to leave the resort and explore the island on your own.

CURRENCY

US Dollar ($) - £1 = $1.5 / €1 = $1.2 Plenty of ATMs and credit cards are readily accepted all across Puerto Rico.

FOOD AND DRINK

There are five restaurants in the resort serving a wide array of gourmet dishes and cuisine, ranging from the vibrant Positivo Sand Bar that serves fantastic al fresco lunchtime fare, to the award-winning Mi Casa, where Spanish dishes are blended with Puerto Rican flavours to enjoy against a beautiful beachfront backdrop.

AIRPORT

The largest airport in Puerto Rico is Luis Munoz Marin International (SJU) and it’s just a 45 minute transfer from Dorado Beach. It’s a short flight from the US mainland and is direct from most major American airports. Puerto Rico is an unincorporated US territory, so US citizens don’t need to go through immigration on arrival. There is a reliable and regular transfer service available to guests of the hotel with a dedicated limo service also on offer.
