THE LURE

The south coast of St. Lucia offers the kind of wonderful Caribbean experience that travel guides wrote about years ago, when tourists first discovered the smaller of the Caribbean islands. Here you’ll enjoy world class kiting, from wave riding to flat water ripping, as well as the laid-back atmosphere and natural surroundings that are so typical of St. Lucia.

THE SET-UP

A wave spot is accessible straight out from Coconut Bay’s exclusive Surf Shack. When the Atlantic swells push in, the cross-shore conditions are great for experienced or novice kite riders. A little bit upwind from the Surf Shack you’ll find some nice flat water. The spot is monitored by a responsible team with a safety boat. The beach curves gently into the wind on the southern end where the wind aims onshore, so you will always end up back on the beach should you not be able to make it back to your starting point. Bump and jump conditions here are good for all levels. At rare times there’s a gentle shore-break, but never heavy-duty waves.

WIND, WEATHER & WATER

The steady east or north-easterly trade winds come in cross-shore from the left, historically blowing from late November until April, but regularly now running to July. The best months are January and February. During the main season you can expect frequent 20 - 25 knot winds. Air temperatures are just perfect: 27 - 33°C / 80 - 90°F all year, cooling off a little at night, especially December and January when you might want some long jeans rather than shorts. Water temperatures vary only very slightly, from roughly 25°C / 77°F at Christmas, to 27°C / 80°F in August. Obviously no wetsuit is required; just a rash vest and sunscreen to protect your skin.

ACCOMMODATION

The all-inclusive Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa has a unique two-worlds-in-one feel, with two distinct wings accommodating both families, couples and singles, with a family waterpark area and a tucked away adult-only ‘Harmony’ area. Guests interested in kitesurfing are welcome to stay in either wing. ‘Surf and Stay’ packages are available.

NO WIND

Coconut Bay Beach Resort has a 25,000 square foot ‘Kidz Klub’ with daily supervised activities and schedules to keep the little ones busy while you enjoy the wind and surf. The island is a tourist’s dream. On the resort grounds, and included in your stay, there is stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and snorkelling. For a fee the resort also offers several excursions, such as horseback riding, zip-lining, mountain biking, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, golf, whale watching, hiking to the Pitons World Heritage Site, dune buggy and Segway tours, in addition to visits to the botanical gardens, waterfalls, rain forest and the world’s only drive-in volcano.

GET AROUND

Vieux Fort is the island’s second largest town and is just a short walk away from the resort’s main entrance. While a contemporary city, it still boasts an old town with colonial homes from the days of French and English rule. Car hire is fairly expensive (around US$65 per day), but it’s worth hiring one for a day or two to explore the rest of the beautiful island, or you can make arrangements for an island tour through the resort’s adventure desk conveniently located in the hotel lobby. Taxis are expensive but more relaxing than the local bus, which follows no particular time table. In general St. Lucia is a friendly island.

Even picky eaters will delight in the delectable food and beverage options at the resort. The resort’s bars include beer, wine and premium liquors and the newest addition to Peter John’s, the resort’s night club area, is an extensive Caribbean rum selection. All of which is included in the all-inclusive packages.
