Kitesurfing - Jamaica: Bounty Bay

THE LURE

Energetic, stunning and exciting, Montego Bay summons the hedonist, gourmet diner, golfer and, now 30 minutes away in Bounty Bay, the kitesurfer, in all of us. A group of kitesurfers have been riding here for ten years, but it's only recently that the first IKO school on the island has opened. Now the fun and rhythm of this inspiring nation can be felt on the water by kitesurfers, too!

THE SET-UP

Thirty minutes east of Montego Bay on Jamaica's beautiful northeast coast lies Bounty Bay, the island's premier spot, offering a wide variety of conditions, perfect for beginners and experienced riders.

It has flat water in the bay, waves out at the reef approximately 300 metres from the beach and chop in the western part of the bay. Owing to a combination of sandy bottom in shallow waters and side-onshore winds, it's perfect for beginners, but also excellent for freestylers as well. Kickers and sliders are planned for the 2011 season, which will make it even better for the hardcore!

WIND WATER AND WEATHER

The main thermal trade wind season sees northeast side-onshore winds come in, averaging 15 - 25 knots from November - April. Summer winds can also be really good but are more inconsistent during the hurricane months of August, September and October. Waves can always be found out on the reef during the trade wind season and the school is open year round with a full repair and Best hire service. The average air temperature is around 28°C / 80°F. You'll be golden in just your boardies! This is the Caribbean!

GET AROUND

In combination with a lesson or a full set rental the school offers a free pick up from several hotels in the Montego Bay/Rose Hall area. Please check the website for details. The school can also recommend a car rental company if you'd rather drive yourself.

ACCOMMODATION

Closest to the spot is the Breezes Trelawny hotel, an all-inclusive resort right down the beach, more accommodation options are in Montego Bay/Rose Hall, which also offers quite a few night-life spots.

FOOD AND DRINK

Montego Bay offers a wide variety of restaurants and supermarkets. The dining here caters for all tastes, from exquisite fine dining, to street-side stalls. This is Jamaica, so you can easily party all night to the reggae dancehall vibes. Falmouth is also handy for small supermarkets and necessities.

NO WIND

Swing lazily in hammocks on the beach or head to one of the many attractions close by. Kiteboarding Jamaica organise ATV safaris, zip line adventures, paint ball, sky diving, horse back riding and more Did you know Jamaica has lots of ecological treasures, from limestone cave labyrinths and gushing waterfalls to mineral springs with curative powers? The island is also famous for its incredible golf courses and resorts. Alternatively head for a picnic at Nature Village farm where you can also go fishing and how could we forget a cultural visit to the capital Kingston!

AIRPORT

Montego Bay's International airport (MBJ) is about 35 minutes away from the kite spot. You can hire a car at the airport or call Kiteboarding Jamaica to arrange a pick up for you. Most hotels offer free airport transfers, too.
