HAWAII LIVES – May – June ’04

So, we turned up on Maui and it’s raining. And continues to do so for the next 10 days. At the risk of turning Kiteworld into Homes and Gardens magazine, we take a trip round some of the locals’ houses to try and sketch a picture of life as a kiteboarder today in Hawaii.
Kiwi Johnston finds Heaven and Hell as he almost drowns in the Gorge, somewhere downstream of Hood River.
We have another interview with Martin Vari - in a sport with a history as short as kiteboarding, you can easily become a part of the establishment at the tender age of 22. Of course, winning two world championships helps, as does revolutionising competitive riding. So how do you get even more attention? Yep, you got it – by swapping sponsors. We talked to Martin about his new deal with RRD, and the future direction of the sport. Also tucked away within this issue is a freeride kite test – the mid-aspect freeride market is evolving. As more and more riders switch down from high-aspect kites, designers have responded by creating a new super-class of mid-aspect performers. We separate the souped-up GTI’s from the standard loafers-and-a-pipe designs.
