Ruben started kiting at 12 years-old and by 15 was travelling the world with a coach who helped him focus for competition and develop his riding skills. Although he had a blast competing in events around the world, notching up top three finishes and nailing the prestigious Red Bull King of the Air title in '05, his flamboyant and adrenaline-filled riding style was far better suited to freeriding and entertaining the masses, so he dropped off the tour and started shooting still shots for magazines as well as video much more.
“This gave me the time and energy to ride more extreme and to really push myself.” he says. And what an impact it had. Ruben pulls crowds wherever he shows up to ride. The flying Red Bulls on his kite scream about the sky with ferocious velocity as he sends his kite careering below him during his infamous mega loops that see him slingshot through the sky in a howling ball of madness.
He is a true personality in the sport, which is reflected by the popular pro model product lines he has with his board, clothing, wetsuits and harnesses sponsors.
Ruben regularly features on sports shows on national TV in Holland and has started up a website on which he's trying to build a community of riders/people who help grow the sport in the right direction. “It's to show more people how we live and push our sport.”
