Leucate, La Franqui, April 13th and 14th, 2010
These last two days have been frustrating to say the least. Both days were called off because of of there being not enough wind to compete. Riders were optimistic that things would pick up throughout both days, but unfortunately this was not to be the case and PKRA race director, Erik Troostheide, had no other choice but to postpone things yet again.
The Tuesday was perhaps the most frustrating day of them all, with the wind never making its mind up as to what direction it wanted to blow and at what speed. It seemed to be picking up strength throughout the day but would always hover at 3 to 5 knots less that what was needed to run the competition. Riders such as Jesse Richman (Cabrinha, USA), Alex Soto (F-ONE, D.R.) and Florian Gruber (North, GER) were among the few who had their kites up in the air testing the wind strength, and Michael Schitzhofer (JN, AUT) jumped in and out of his wetsuit more than three times waiting for the official warm up announcement. It wasn't to be though.
The Wednesday winds were clearly uncooperative from the offset so there was less waiting around in hopes of a turn around, allowing the riders and spectators alike to have some fun in the sun. Single elimination champion Andy Yates (Slingshot, AUD), Youri Zoon (Slingshot, NED), Kevin Langeree (Naish, NED), Angela Peral (North, ESP), Jesse Richman (Cabrinha, USA) and Alberto Rondina (Cabrinha, ITA) all competed in a 30-minute long 'training day' competition that saw them jump, crawl and sweat through an obstacle course, all the while having a drill sergeant scream into their ears.
There was also loads of activities going on for the crowds to get involved in including beach volleyball, dancing and a display of the worlds longest kite lighting up the sky.
April 15th will mark the final day in Leucate and will hopefully see things out with a bang with some promising weather conditions.
