Vilanculos downwind – Mozambique’s new challenge for kite surfing enthusiasts
Situated on the Mozambique mainland, the scenic town of Vilanculos provides the perfect gateway to the stunning Bazaruto Archipelago. Accessible via good roads from South Africa and Swaziland, or via regular LAM and Air Link flights, Vilanculos is a popular tourist destination where azure waters, coral reefs and kiting winds conspire to provide the ultimate holiday experience.
With a variety of places to stay from backpackers, self-catering chalets and apartments through to luxury lodges, the word is out - this is a perfect destination for the kiting enthusiast! Increasing numbers of keen surfers are pulling in to experience the temperate climate, unpredictable waters and inflating winds offered by this unspoiled and welcoming tropical destination. Here you can also scuba on the world renowned coral reefs, where the underwater inhabitants are both prolific and varied, or take a dhow trip to the nearby islands where pansy shells and pristine beaches await you.
Having hosted the first VilanculosDownwind event for Mozambican based participants last September Vilanculos kite surfing operations, in association with a variety of local businesses, are now extending an invitation to enthusiasts from around the globe to participate in their second event to be held from 20 – 22nd September, 2013.

Sponsored by VODACOM, ENGEN, NAISH and the local companies GRUPO SEA, BIG BLUE and TAURUS, the 20 km challenge will take surfers from Vilanculos, northwards along the pristine coastline to Marimba Secret Gardens, an area of great natural beauty.
