There's not long left until the Lord of the Wind Showdown in Los Barriles, Mexico from 12-16 January 2011. We caught up with event organisers Chris Rodgers and Dan Holbrook to hear what they had to say about how things are shaping up:
"We have been busy! Dan and Chris (We) have recently put 9,000 (that's nine thousand!) miles on our F350 pick up truck heading north for the annual ASWI show in Hood River this year. From the moment we arrived in Hood River, we were plugging our event.
We're proud to announce that Shadowbox GPS Systems is all in for demo'ing their product during two or three of the events over the four days of competition. An anonymous donor has upped the ante by offering $1,000.00 USD to both a kiter or windsurfer that breaks their (Shadowbox) record high jump. Los Barriles conditions are going to be hard to compete with Hookipa for windsurfers but you never know. The kiters stand a pretty good chance with our point break and huge swell.
Staying at the Husum Riverside B & B gave us a great vantage point from which to base. Bill Morrissey at Dakine stepped up to the plate in sponsorship immediately. That was the reason to drive. To carry all the swag home! Ford Huntington at Real Wind donated a brand new sail, fins, clothing and tons of stickers to pass around. Promotion Wetsuits also donated their products for sponsorship. I've personally been wearing their wetsuits for 20 years of windsurfing. Love'em.
We talked to a lot of the reps for the major manufacturers and are doing our best to woo them to Los Barriles for this event. The best part was getting to meet the team riders, the guys and gals that are winning events on specific gear. They're the ones that can talk the talk and hopefully will talk on our beach in January.
We're still building and updating the website: www.lordofthewindbaja.com. Please check it out and sign up to compete for the mega bucks we're offering for the Lord of the Wind Showdown. If you need another reason and are feeling the need to give back to a community, remember we are donating profits to Rotary Club Los Barriles. Their work helps education, health programs and general better living in our small community."
