Lewis got into watersports by learning to windsurf outside his house after taking a gamble on some equipment for ?30 in a car boot sale in 2001. And what a gamble that turned out to be! From there Lewis started kitesurfing in 2003 and has gone on to become the British freestyle kitesurfing champion for the last three years on the trot and has also competed in various world tour events, regularly placing well with the worlds best. Kitesurfing adapts its style and moves from many sports including surfing and windsurfing, but Lewis sees wakeboarding as the sport's biggest influence.

“I feel like kiteboarding has always been fighting for credibility from the sport it has big roots in - wakeboarding. This is because with a kite you can make the same tricks easier by placing it higher then a standard boat or cable will pull you from. In 2009 my goal as a kitesurfer is to show kitesurfing as a unique respectable sport, which has its own risks.”

Moving away from such a strong focus on competition Lewis is instead focusing on perfection and is looking to have his tricks her performs nailed down to a T, rather than simply be able to perform as many as possible in an 8-minute heat. His style is utterly wakeboarding-related riding with his kite low and always powered. Lewis considers a good day to be when he's happy leaving the water knowing that five things he did stayed true to the highest standard of wakeboarding today.

 

Lewis says: “I was stoked when I was invited to White Air. Not only is it a very local event for me, in which I'll be happy to represent my area, but all the riders will be riding together rather than against each other, encouraging us to push the sport forward.” That's the spirit Lewis!
