KSP Peru Day Four Report

Pacasmayo, Peru, October 22, 2011: Despite a favorable forecast, the wind never filled in quite enough to get the Pacasmayo Kite Surf Pro off the ground today. As head-high sets rolled in throughout the morning and afternoon, the KSP crew kept optimistic and re-assessed the conditions every 30 minutes in hopes of the wind ramping up just a notch.
The waves didn't go to waste though, as competitors squeezed in short surf sessions while on-call for the heat ladder to commence. KSP Head Judge Brad Price pushed the first possible start of the contest to tomorrow when making the final call at 5 p.m. - at which point the majority of riders took to the water with their surfboards.
Known for it's lengthy left-hand waves, Pacasmayo gave competitors a taste of just how ridiculously long it can get. Born and raised on Maui, Hawaii, North team rider Patri McLaughlin scored the longest ride of his life.
Dropping in upwind of the lighthouse, McLaughlin concluded his ride by throwing his hands in the air in a state of exhilarated disbelief in front of El Faro Adventure Resort. 'My legs were burning,' says McLaughlin. 'It was crazy, the sickest thing ever.'
'I've never ridden anything even close to that long,' he says. 'It was half-mile or three-quarters of a mile long or something! I don't think there's any waves on Maui that are even half that long.'
Surely, Patri won't be the last KSP competitor to have his or her mind blown, as the long-awaited swell is set to peak tomorrow (Sunday), which should further increase the wave length. The wind forecast also looks solid for starting the kite surfing contest.
Tomorrow morning at 8:55 a.m. (PET), after assessing conditions, event directors will announce the daily schedule, which will both be live-streamed and posted online at www.kspworldtour.com/live ? with 10 a.m. as the first possible start of the competition.
