Kenya Kitesurfing Competition 2011

DIANI BEACH, KENYA

Words - Jamie Hockley

2010 Proved to be yet another break through year for the 6th annual Kenya Cup Open kite surfing championships, held by H2O Extreme Water Sports.
The event was held over two days on the 28th and 29th of December at ‘Ali Barbour’s Forty Thieves Beach Bar and Restaurant’ on the pristine Diani Beach. With an average of 20-25 knots of wind and flat water on the inside of the lagoon, the conditions were perfect. Over the two days the event was watched by over two thousand enthusiastic spectators, which was almost double the number from the 2009 event.

This was the first year that the Kenya Cup joined forces with The Che Shale Kite Masters, held in Malindi in August, to create Kenya’s first kite surf tour.
This year the event will be held at Forty Thieves Beach Bar on the 28th and 29th of December.
The main open freestyle event will take place on the 28th. This event will count for the Kenya Kite Surf Tour.

Day 2, the 29th will be more of a ‘fun’ day aimed at entertaining the spectators. The events will include a ‘Big Air’ (where the competitors will attempt to jump as high as possible), an ‘Expression Session’ and a auctioned ‘Relay Race’(a crowd favourite).
On the evening of the 29th, after the prize giving, the all famous ‘Hawaiian Party is taking place, this year we are proud to announce The Itch will be performing as a sunset session on the beach! This event is not to be missed …so come along in your best Hawaiian outfit!

With thanks to Jamie Hockley for keeping us posted.
