Jim's Cape Town Escapades

View of Table Mountain in Cape TownI'm currently in Cape Town for six weeks 'working' on the next issue, as well as for a story that will run in the September issue, in time to tempt you all out here next season. Cape Town is a special place for me; it's where my Kiteworld journey began back in 2002, it's also one of the most beautiful cities I've ever been to and, more importantly, it just constantly delivers bloody good conditions at this time of year - which I've been in dire need of for some time!
I'll post up as much as I can in terms of what mucky moves are going down, who's in town and what we're working on for the mag. Excuse the lack of kiting pictures from the first three days; like I said, I've been in need of some good kiting and hell have I had it. Two sessions on a 5m and a perfect 7m cross-offshore downwinder from Sunset beach in decent swell. I'm a goofy footer and wind from the left is bliss. I haven't been here for eight years, but standing on the beach when I arrived felt more like it had only been five minutes, such is the atmosphere and character of the place. It's hard to forget.
Next issue marks our half century, an achievement we're all extremely proud of. We'll be looking back over some of our own highlights and focussing on some key moments and characters in the sport from the last decade (many of whom happen to be in Cape Town, still chasing the wind like lunatics).
There are some people I need to thank and who you must look up when you make plans to come out here:
Sheree Brown runs the website www.capetownguru.com ? she's a go-to woman for virtually anything you might need, but mainly accommodation and activities. She knows everyone and everything about this place.
Alex Vliege and Grant Brown run The Endless Summer Beach House as well as another place called The Surf House. I'm staying in The Endless Bag Bay, Cape TownSummer Beach House right on the sea front. It's a pretty rad place, there's always something going on, pro riders dropping by or staying, plus you're right on the sea front and just need to cross the road to kite. Alex and Grant are VW camper/combi van nuts, and hosted a rally out the front of the hostel today. Like I said, there's always something going on here. www.endlesssummerbeachhouse.co.za
Acker Car Rentals specialise in 1980's Mercedes Benz cars. Like driving around in your lounge, these are very popular amongst kiters and windsurfers. In great condition, with well maintained engines, the boots are huge, meaning you can keep your kit safely locked away inside while you're on the water. I'm in love with my 'goldie'. www.ackercarrentals.co.za
For now, here are some views from my first three days in kiting paradise. More soon. It's braai time Big Bay developmentagain, bru!
