Paddle Round The Pier 2010, Brighton, UK, 03-04 July
With a brand new Flexifoil ION 12.5m kite was up for grabs this year in our 'Pump Up The Kite' competition, the KW team with the help of Flexifoil's Martyn Hogg and James from Bracklesham Boardriders managed to promote the sport of kitesurfing to the masses in what was a fantastic turn out here in sunny Brighton.
This years Paddle Round The Pier festival was a storming success. We're no strangers to attending PRTP but this year was special. A huge turn out, good wind conditions and a scorching sun made it feel like we were in the tropics rather than our local beach. Everyone was getting involved in everything, from kiters, skaters and surfers to tourists and kids. We were doing our part to help promote kitesurfing as a whole and got some great feedback from people who had just started learning and are completely hooked, and from beginners who have been inspired to start and will be hitting the water soon!
Our 'Pump Up The Kite' competition, arranged by leading kite brand Flexifoil, separated the men from the boys and was an all-round laugh for everyone involved. Tom Cooper from Herts managed to pump his way to victory in just 10.8 seconds, winning himself a brand new FlexifoilION 12.5m kite. When asked what his technique was Tom replied, 'I just do the same thing I do when I go kiting ? try and pump up the kite as quick as I can so I can get out there!' Congratulations Tom. We won't say how the KW team fared compared to him...
The atmosphere was as you would expect from a surf inspired beach festival: completely laid back, friendly and entertaining. All the events on show went off without a hitch including the urban athletics, White Crane martial arts displays, street surfing, skateboarding, landpaddling, rollerskiing, mountainboarding and more. There was good food, great music and superb characters that you could really only hope to find our fabled town by the sea.
Thanks to everyone who came down and said hi to us. Also thanks to Bracklesham Boardriders who helped promote the sport along side us for the weekend. We're looking forward to next year and we hope you all are to.
Keep your eyes peeled for our test review of Flexifoil's gem of a kite, the ION, coming soon.
Grunts, groans... and ecstasy for one!
