BKSA Penultimate Round

Over 5,000 spectators attended Ayr's Kiteival to watch the country's top kite sports athletes compete in the penultimate round of the British Kitesurfing Association (BKSA)'s UK tour. Facing strong winds on the water riders competed in a freestyle kitesurf competition, while the town's Low Green was the venue for a great display of tricks from riders in the kite buggy and kite landboard events.
The competition was fierce in all fleets despite difficult wind conditions which caused several heats to be re-run due to wind shifts and drops.
Event organiser and BKSA Chairman Richard Gowers said: 'Ayr is a fantastic spot, we usually always get wind and this year didn't disappoint. We started with the pro competitors on Friday ? lots of the locals had a great repertoire of tricks and were riding hard, with Troon boy Tommy Gaunt putting down some great moves.
'On the grass the kite landboarders were going huge in the gusty conditions ? Greg Chilton was almost flying ? and Essex duo Ash Garwood and Jack Elston were throwing down some great unhooked riding.'
First on the water on Friday were the pro ladies, whose freestyle kitesurf competition used a round robin format with every rider competing against each other. Nicky Rudd put in a dominant performance, winning every single heat and taking her first ever podium ? but second place for Hannah Whiteley was enough to secure the Lytham St Annes-based kitesurfer her third British title with one event still to go.
In the pro men's division current tour leader Luke Whiteside took his third consecutive win in BKSA tour events to amass an almost unbeatable points total of 4,415. Second place went to last year's champion Ned Taylor, who is the only competitor able in theory to catch Whiteside in the final event.
Liverpool's Luke Whiteside said: 'It would be amazing to win the championship, I've always wanted to be British Champion. There are a number of tough competitors this year but Ned Taylor is right behind me in the standings and it's going to go right down to the last event of the year.'
In the landboard competition Essex duo Ash Garwood and Jack Elston dominated the scoreboard showcasing great unhooked riding, with current leader and 2010 champion Jack taking first place and Ash coming in second.
Saturday saw a flurry of riders from all over the country register for the event, including first timers Lana Cully and 53 year old Ralph Crathorne. Competitors in the seniors, amateurs and juniors faced southerly wind, trashed kites and tangles and put on great performances, which saw some surprise winners.
The crowds on the final day were treated to an expression session starring 18 of the top juniors and pro kitesurfers who hit the water for the rider-judged competition.
Seasoned competitor Ali Barratt showed how to perform in the difficult conditions to take the King of Watersports prize, presented in a trophy ceremony by deputy provost Mary Kilpatrick. The tour moves on to Blackpool for the final event of the 2011 season from Thursday 6th to Saturday 8th October.
