2013 Asian Kiteboard Championship Tour

KTA Indonesia ? Event Summary

In its 4th season of international kiteboard competition the KTA and the Asia Kiteboard Championship Tour has hit Indonesia for the first time!
The KTA Asian Championship season has blasted off with an incredible week of kiteboard action from the beautiful Indonesian island of Bintan (20-24 Feb 2013). Located South East of Singapore Bintan as every competitor that attended now knows has been one of Asia's best kept kiteboarding secrets!

KTA Indonesia

In this new location for the KTA being hosted by the Bintan Regency in association with the Agro Beach Resort and Indonesian Sailing Federation, the KTA is pleased to report a record discipline entry of 123 for the Freestyle and Race events. For the first time the KTA Asian Tour was carrying ISAF (International Sailing Federation) as well as IKA (International Kiteboarding Association) World ranking points, plus it was also the first time the KTA is including a weekend fun race and to top it all off it added the launch of the first ever KTA Kite Kids power kite training classes.
With a week of near perfect wind conditions the KTA Indonesia was able to serve up a full menu of racing that gave a final tally of 50 race between the men's and women's sections of the RB (raceboard), TT (twin-tip) and Weekend Warriors (fun race)classes. Plus if this was not enough then the freestyle revelled in the strong wind conditions providing two days of stunning ariel riding as it made its way through a full double eliminator.

For the racers KTA 2012 Asian and Open Champions dominated the first outing of the season with Yo Narapichit Pudla (THA) and Rebecka Maudal (NOR) returning 11 straight wins each in the men's RB and women's TT respectively. Katrhin Borgwardt (GER) also once again took the women's RB title to maintain her position as one of the KTA's most constant riders while new face Atte Kaple (SWE) made a big arrival at the KTA by taking the number one slot in the TT class.
Tables were also being turned in the freestyle as last year's number three Long Nguyen Duc (VTN) took full advantage of the fact that the regaining Asian Champions Ken Nacor (PHL) was unfortunately absent from this round to show what a solid close seasons training could do as he powered his way to the top to claim his first ever KTA round win. Meanwhile for girls an epic battle unfolded between Russia's Victoria Soloveykina and Estonia's Kristin Oja who having taken one final each had to meet one more time for a super final to decide things which by the smallest of margins gave the title to Soloveykina in the end.

The anticipated media interest also came through as hoped for at both national and international level with reports on the event as far and wide as The Metro in the UK and the Washington Post in the US, showing that regardless of the recent Olympic outcomes interest in kiteboarding still continues to grow.

About KTA
The KTA was formed to give an international platform to the skills and talents of kiteboarders throughout Asia, and to bring professional level competition and training to the region. The KTA launched the first international tour of its kind in Asia in September 2009 visiting five countries over the 2009/2010 season. Following the success of its first tour the KTA has seen two further successful seasons that have also grown to support a range of National competitions, Open Events and International Championships.

The KTA is open to everyone from anywhere, amateur and pro riders alike. It is the one and only officially Asian continental tour sanctioned by the International Kiteboarding Association (IKA), the kitesurfing world governing body, which in turn is the class representative to the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) sanctioning international sailing competitions from world championship to Olympic levels.

KTA's philosophy is to grow steadily. They are focused on giving homegrown riders the opportunity to experience the fun and excitement of being part of an international competition scene. The KTA hopes to provide a stepping-stone for the region's best riders onto the World tour scene by giving them the full experience of high level competition at a more local level, and who knows, maybe in the process discover a future world champion!
The KTA Asian Tour will result in tour stop event champions, the eventual overall KTA open tour champions, and the Asian champions and world rankings in the IKA and ISAF sanctioned classes of freestyle and kite racing.
