Shot whilst the Real crew were sailing around the British Virgin Islands on yachts, it's hard not to feel that somebody really lucked-out with the careers advisor. The Real Kiteboarding Surf Kite Camp is, as you would guess, a surf instructional - the fourth DVD in the Real series, presented by Trip Forman and Matt Nuzzo and starring the Real coaches.
The DVD really speaks to intermediates looking to start taking on waves, it takes you on a logical step-by-step journey from understanding the different way waves form and work, getting accustomed to the conditions, riding the waves and developing tricks. As well as technique, the DVD also highlights many of the pitfalls and how to minimize the number of big rinses you get.
We start in the classroom with Surf 101 giving you a sound schooling in how waves form, the different types of breaks and the various elements that you need to think about before you head out. Section two: Sessions, gets you into the water and working on the basics, building your confidence and giving you a heads up as to what to expect and what to think about when you head out for those first tentative rides.
Finally, Surf Skills is the finishing school and covers using waves as ramps, bottom turns, top turns, kite control and riding technique right through to aerials off-the-lip ? and doing it with style. The structure makes it easy to dip in and out of which is handy for recapping before you head out, or finding your level if you're already used to chop and shore-break.
Riders are on twin-tips and surf boards and I would have liked to have seen a section on gybing a surfboard. Though not the most technically shot DVD in their library, Real's Surf Kite Camp is a comprehensive and in-depth introduction to riding in waves and is jam-packed with wave footage. And in true Real style, the bonus section section is huge, packed with more hints and tips, advice on kit, the pros and cons of board choice and of course footage from Hatteras.
All in all it's a great introduction to wave riding and if you're wondering how to get out amongst the waves, or to develop your riding, there's something in here for you.
Real Surf was featured in Issue #25.
