Windtown, Cumbuco

Shop Showdown interview with Astrid de Rijk

Who do you work in a team with?

Cleo, Ricardo, Aldo

How long have you lived in Cumbuco?
4 years

When people come into the shop and want to know about the history of kitesurfing in this area, what stories do you tell them?
The Northeast of Brazil is a bit back on development, so it took a while before Cumbuco was discovered as a kite spot. Because of the reliable wind conditions, the attractive temperature and the variety of kite spots, Cumbuco grew to be one of the worlds' most well-known locations for kitesurfing in the past years. Although almost anyone kitesurfing ever visited this place, it will never be crowded. The village itself is a 6 km stretch of beach, which is part again of hundreds of kilometres of beach, all great for kitesurfing.

Tell us the top three things about kitesurfing in Cumbuco or at your spot?
Most reliable wind in the world
Kitesurfing in just boardshorts/bikini all year round
Best place for downwinders

When does the magic happen?
Mainly from June until the end of January: 95% of days kitesurfing.
March and April are rain season, but still than you can kite 65% of the days.

If you could choose one kite and one board to ride here all year what would it be and why?
7m Airush Razor and 128 Brunotti Riptide or strapless waveboard.
The wind conditions are the same every day and I can kitesurf daily with my 7m in the main season.

If you had to choose one spot to ride in Cumbuco, which would it be and why?
I always kitesurf right in front of Windtown, because it's a great spot and very convenient to have everything at hand (fruit shakes in between kite sessions, etc). Sometime I make a downwinder to the Cauipe lagoon, which is located at a 6 km distance.

There are quite often waves in Cumbuco. What are your top tips for riding in and around waves and dealing with them?
I love it when the swell is coming up, to make a downwinder to Cauipe lagoon. With the always prevailing side onshore winds it's perfect to ride waves the whole way.

Lots of the world's best riders visit Cumbuco each year. Who is your favourite to spend some time watching and why?
Bas Koole is here every year. Apart from his technical abilities, he performs his tricks very stylish.

If you had one tip that you could give to someone visiting this area to make their trip even better, what would it be?
Stay beachfront. It's so nice to roll out of your bed straight onto your board.

Describe your perfect day in Cumbuco.
Cumbuco is all about kitesurfing, all day, every day. I like to start the day with a beach run, followed by a healthy breakfast. In between my kite sessions I have a natural lunch. After kitesurfing it's great to enjoy the sunset on the beach with a cocktail, followed by a massage to loosen up the stiff muscles. Then have dinner in one of the restaurants in the village centre.

Where serves the best after-session beer?
Anywhere beachfront.

Where is your favourite place to eat out in Cumbuco? Both a special one-off and as a daily chow down.
There are more than 30 restaurants in the village centre of Cumbuco and they all serve very natural food.
Daily: Muda Restaurant
Special: Gaucho Restaurant (best meat ever tasted)

If a customer walks into the shop saying they've had too much kitesurfing and need a day off to do something else, what do you recommend?
Enjoy a buggy tour through the dunes, or
Go into the mountains, or
Go visit Fortaleza (this 3 million habitants city is 30 km away from Cumbuco), or
Go horse riding along the beach, or
Visit the enormous Spa at Vila Gale

What is the most useful Brazilian phrase that you could teach us? And what does it mean?
Tudo legal = Everything is chill

What is the best gadget you sell?
Boardshorts and lycra's, to have some sun protection.
