THE LURE: A hidden treasure lying in the south of the scattered Red Sea resorts and 400 kilometres south of Hurghada, Wadi Lahami consists of a small shaded terrace and restaurant, 16 or so eco tents, a handful of chalets, a dive centre and a kitesurf hut. All of this nestled between mangrove swamps, a huge bay and white sandy beaches. But for a hotel a mile away, there is nothing but pure white-capping heaven.
Whadi Lahmi is featured in Issue #32. Get your copy from your local kite shop or subscribe online here .
THE SET UP: Grin like an idiot as you rip across the flattest turquoise reef protected two-foot deep bay. The wind builds as the day goes by and upwind of the resort you'll find a sweet little wave spot with waves breaking on the outer reef.
Wadi Lahami is one of only 3 lagoons of this size along the whole of the Egyptian Red Sea coast! Perfect wind situation for experienced Kite & Windsurfers and great most of the year for novices too.
Good equipment available for hire. Easy observation of all in the water. Rescue RIBS directly available.
WIND & WEATHER: Cross-shore from the left. Solid force four to six most of the year, although the most consistent months are March to October. Air temperatures can top out at around 40°C in June/July and only drop to 20°C in the winter.
CENTRES: There is one centre based at the Ecolodge Wadi Lahami Village. The instructors are IKO and VDWS recognised and instruction is in English, French and German. Kites are available to rent as well as windsurfing kit. Book through Oonas Divers .
OFF THE WATER: Wadi Lahami is not for everyone, If you want night-life or something other than kiting, sleeping or eating, then this place will drive you mad. But if you like nothing more than kiting all day, relaxing in hammocks and chatting to great people, then this place will suck you right in. Stay in large tents on the water's edge or stone huts with en-suite bathrooms.
Most people are here for the diving and the unspoilt reefs are some of the best you will find. This place is a real hidden treasure and the eclectic mix of fascinating and talented people that return time and time again love the beautiful simplicity of this quiet idyll.
ACCOMMODATION:
Ecolodge Wadi Lahami Village Tents – no single supplement! Spacious twin bedded tents with electricity and locally made furniture completes the Egyptian style. A 20-litre supply of water and wash bowl is left outside daily. Toilets and showers are a short walk way.
Madyafa Guest Houses Traditional domed, vaulted desert architecture and thick stone walls keep the Madyafas cool. Enter by the hallway to the large and airy bedroom with en-suite facilities and enjoy the sea and desert mountain views from your own sun terrace.
AIRPORTS: Marsa Alum is the closest, 2 hours away. There are more frequent flights to Hurghada (HRG) which is 5 hours to the North.
