KITESURFING HOLIDAY - DAHAB

SNAPSHOT
Who can argue with wind stats averaging 300 days over 12 knots each year for the last ten years? Combine that with the excellent diving and the options of peaceful nights in the bay area or more lively times in the nearby town of Masbat, Dahab is a contender for your kitesurfing holiday spending money.

THE KITING
The 'spot' lies in the wind channel of the Gulf of Aqaba with the full force of the wind hitting the peninsula that juts seven kilometres into the gulf, acting like an aircraft wing as the high/low pressure differences kick up the wind. Beginners learn in the flat, shallow (30 - 40cm!) waters of the lagoon that measures 500 x 300 metres. Once you're beyond the up-and-running stages head to the deeper water in front of the Bay View hotel for some kicker and jump action. Booties are required as there's some reef underfoot to be careful of.

WATER, WIND AND WEATHER
You read the snapshot correctly - this place blows! In a good way! June, July, August, September and October are officially the windiest months, but the rest aren't far behind. Cranking in from the north (side-shore from the left), the wind ruffles water that sits in the mid-twenties most of the year. Take a shorty March - May and September. June - August you'll be good in a rashie and boardies. More of a full length wettie needed in the winter to keep the chill off.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
Sharm El Sheikh airport is approximately a four hour flight from most destinations in Europe. Transfers to Dahab take about an hour by taxi and there's no need to hire a car – taxis are plentiful and cost €40 one way.

NON-KITING KICKS
Dahab is also a top destination for diving.
