Enable Passion ready to depart!
PRESS RELEASE FROM ENABLE PASSION:
AMSTERDAM – 19 November 2013. The Foundation Enable Passion is about to launch its first project: the HTC Atlantic Kite Challenge. Six kite surfers are departing from René Egli, Fuerteventura (Canary Islands) to cross the Atlantic Ocean heading to Blue Haven in the Turks and Caicos Islands. In the first-ever relay of its kind and the longest ever ‘downwinder’, they will cover a distance of 5,986 kilometres across the Atlantic Ocean departing on Wednesday, November 20th, 2013. With a spectacular opening ceremony at René Egli, Fuerteventura, the kite surfers are starting their journey at 11:30 am local time, Wednesday 20th November. Accompanied by his fellow teammates, Filippo van Hellenberg Hubar, as initiator of this project, will kick off the journey by kiting the first shift.
The six kite surfers are accompanied by a catamaran, Lagoon 500, called the Double-A, with four crewmembers including the Dutch sailing professional Erik van Vuuren as team captain. Every kiter will accomplish two two-hour shifts per day – one in the daytime and one at night – so one of the team members will always be out there on the ocean going the distance. This approach enables the team to cover the entire distance in approximately 19 days, depending on wind speeds. The arrival at Blue Haven Resort and Marina in the Turks and Caicos Islands is planned between December 7th and 10th, 2013.

CROSSING PERSONEL AND SPECIFICS
HTC is the main sponsor of the Atlantic Kite Challenge. The company wants to enable “change makers” to pursue their dreams and to make the impossible possible. Enable Passion pushes boundaries. HTC has the same goal when pursuing innovation. This is why HTC and Enable Passion are a perfect match.
“The challenge the kite surfers face is indescribable. Their enormous drive in realising this project is consistent with the brand HTC”, Mark Moon, HTC’s General Manager for Western Europe, says. The team is also sponsored by René Egli/Melia (departure), Blue Haven Resort and Marina (arrival), Mystic (apparel & technical gear), STAS picture hanging systems, Urge (gear), Slingshot (kites, boards), GoPro (cameras), Van Vuuren Performance Sailing and Leisure Activist Group.
Participants of the HTC Atlantic Kite Challenge are Filippo van Hellenberg Hubar (Netherlands), Camilla Ringvold (Norway), Max Blom (Netherlands), Eric Pequeno (USA), Dennis Gijsbers (Netherlands) and Ike Frans (Netherlands).
Filippo came up with the idea of crossing the Atlantic Ocean. His passion for kitesurfing and his experience with project management as a strategic consultant were paramount in realising the HTC Atlantic Kite Challenge.
Camilla has won numerous Norwegian kite contests – on both water and snow. She owns one of the biggest kite clothing stores in Norway. She also teaches kiting and organises big events.
Max is a familiar face in the kitesurfers’ world as he is a co-founder of Mystic, a clothing label for surfers. His passion for kitesurfing started in 2003. He has been supporting the sport for more than ten years through various technical innovations.
Eric is a born and raised kitesurfer and winner of the 6th rider competition. He has been devoted to kitesurfing since 2008, having become an experienced kiter on the Great Lakes. Chasing wind and doing everything he can to not miss a chance to be on the water is what he lives for.
Dennis is an experienced kiter and awarded with a trophy cabinet that contains over ten international prizes and awards: he is a two time Dutch Kitebuggy Champion, placed 4th in the Kitebuggy World Cup and broke the official World Record ‘24 Hours Enduro Race’ with a stunning 1,050km distance in a 24h non-stop race against the clock.
Ike is a highly skilled kiter with more than thirteen years of experience in kitesurfing. During winter he “escapes” the Netherlands and resides in warmer places in order to be on the water. Ike takes part in many SUP races and became Dutch Champion (long distance) in 2012 and 2013.
In order to guarantee the highest degree of safety possible during the challenge the team is supported by an experienced crew. Erik van Vuuren, (Netherlands) will join the team as Captain on board of the Double A. Erik is a multiple World Champion Gold medallist, was awarded the title of offshore sailor of the year (2012), ended 3rd during the Class40 Global Ocean Race 2012 and was part of the first and only Dutch team to win the Admirals Cup. Arne Ostby, (Norway) has a long experience as a captain, and has worked on numerous yachts of all sizes in the Caribbean since 2008. He is now the proud owner and skipper of the Double A – a Lagoon 500 catamaran.
Sophie Cohen (Netherlands) is an experienced sailor and kitesurf enthusiast. Sophie is also a doctor in Amsterdam and will join the Enable Passion crew as the team medic.
Bram de Vos (Netherlands), is winner of the HTC Reporter Election and will join the team as cameraman. Bram is an experienced sailor and has crossed both the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.
