THE LURE Puerto Rico is a tropical paradise, often referred to as the Maui of the Atlantic. Blessed with beautiful beaches, top wind and wave conditions and beautiful beach goers, this is one place you really won't want to leave
THE SET-UP: San Juan in the northeast offers glorious, sandy beaches that provide comfortable conditions for all levels with flat to choppy water. Just under two miles out from the shore you'll also find waves, depending on the swell direction. Lots of space and limited crowds means it's perfect for beginners to learn and great for experts to show off their moves.
WIND, WATER AND WEATHER: The best winds are from December to September with wind speeds averaging 15 to 25 knots from the east. The winds taper off a bit in May, suiting beginners nicely. September and October can be unpredictable, more in the 10 - 25+ knot range. It's also likely to rain in November when it's peak hurricane season. The North Atlantic high generates the trade winds that blow during late spring and summer at a steady 15 - 20 knots. Waves are best December to April when you'll regularly find waist to double-overhead conditions. Typically wind speeds will pick up in the morning and drop off at four or five in the afternoon. February is the windiest month of winter. Air temperatures average 30°C / 82°F throughout the year, so bring your best sun block! You won't need a wetsuit in summertime as the water temperature is a toasty 26°C /79°F.
