KITESURFING HOLIDAYS - PAPUA NEW GUINEA

THE LURE
For the adventurous kiter, a trip here is an experience never to be forgotten. Take a seven day boat trip on the MV Golden Dawn, or stay on the Trobriand islands; a remarkable collection of scattered atolls and coral reefs (often known as the Kiriwina islands). Natural wilderness, breathtaking landscapes, fascinating mystery, lost  cultures, tropical jungles and very happy and welcoming people await you. "Yeah but is it breezy, mate?" you ask. If consistent 18 - 25 knot trade winds are on yourholiday agenda, blowing over warm, tropical and uncrowded waters, then get booking. Choose the boat cruise and you'll be provided with safe, comfortable accommodation, get all your meals cooked onboard and the crew will guide you to the best kiting beaches and then follow you on epic downwinders as you explore the southern coast.

THE SET-UP
Port Moresby is the capital city and where all flights come into. There are several kite beaches in and around the city, offering a mix of flat water and waves. Conditions change according to tides, so check with the local crew for their tips to making the most of it. Hula Village is southeast of Port Moresby and is where PNG's first local kiters live. Spectators will come out in large numbers to stand on the beach and watch you. This lively village is on a peninsula, surrounded with flat water protected by a barrier reef. There are lagoons and sand dunes as well as ocean swells on the reef's outer edge. Further east, Milne Bay Province has hundreds of picturesque islands, including the Trobriand group, with unlimited riding spots, sandbanks, little white sand islands, flat water, waves and wrecks. Take your time to shake hands with people on the beach before launching. They are very friendly and will want to welcome you to their village and country.

WIND, WATER AND WEATHER
The southeast trade winds blow consistently between 20 and 30 knots from May to November. The strongest months are July to September, and are also when you'll get the best waves. Your seven and ten metre kites will be the most frequently used. During the trade season, the air temperatures are 27-30ºC / 80-86ºF, cooling at night to 20-24ºC / 68-75ºF. A jumper or wind stopper will be handy at times.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
All flights land in the capital, Port Moresby (POM). On boat trips all transfers and pick-ups are included, taking just 15 minutes to get to the port. On the Trobriand islands hire a driver with a car or use the bus from the lodge you stay in. 15 - 20 minutes out of the airport and you'll be at one of the local kite beaches. The locally brewed beer is called SP lager and it's definitely worth trying a few. Sharing a beer with a villager is a sure way to make good friends. Enjoy local food in the villages or head to the city for a choice of restaurants, most serving Asian cuisine

NO WIND?
The diving is excellent here and the MV Golden Dawn is a fully equipped diving vessel. Anywhere you stay you'll have the opportunity of fantastic snorkelling, fishing and exploration. Cultural appeal aplenty, enjoy white sandy beaches and islands while you sample the unique culture and lifestyle. Only a small number of tourists visit PNG and there are so many areas to explore. For the excercise crazy there's also stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking.
